Grants
are "gifts" that a person, institution or
company can receive in return for performing a certain
specified activity. Unless you break the covenants,
that is, the undertaking you give when accepting the
grant that you will perform a certain activity, they are
not returnable. A large number of government agencies
sole purpose is to distribute money to a variety of
causes. These agencies are required by law to
fund specific activities with grants. The total amount is
said to be over a trillion dollars from which
individuals and groups can benefit.
Additionally,
there are private charitable institutions whose sole
purpose it is to support specific activities and causes
with grants and sometimes loans.
Their main reasons for this financial bonanza
is that the government wants to encourage specific
activities or institutions, such as small business, the
arts, sports or similar undertakings. Corporations on the
other hand want to be seen as "good citizens"
and as giving something back to the community.
Since a large proportion of grants from private
institutions are tax deductible, the government virtually
co-finances charitable activity by foregoing taxes.
Summary
There is a whole industry around "how and for
what you can obtain grants". The most famous of
these can often be seen on TV, advertising his book (see

are shown below. But remember a grant is an
investment and not income. It is meant to
finance the performing of a specific task that may or may
not lead to additional income, such as financing a
business start up, expanding a business, re-education of
retraining.
